Electronic Coatings

ELECTRONIC COATINGS WITH DIFFERENT PROPERTIES

Electronic coatings play a pivotal role in materials science, and have paved the way for numerous technological breakthroughs. They are essential for the proper functioning of modern semiconductor devices, sensors and energy storage solutions.

They also characterize the efficiency of solar cells, the integrity of printed circuit boards and the performance of displays. Their versatility and relevance make them an indispensable part of progress in today’s electronics industry.

What We Offer

ELECTRICALLY CONDUCTIVE COATINGS

Electrically conductive coatings can be produced by applying thin coatings of metal using a direct current sputtering process in a vacuum (DC sputtering). Depending on the underlying material and the coating underneath, the properties of the metal coating – in terms of barrier or adhesion – are important, in addition to the electrical conductivity.

Conductive coatings in electrical circuits include, for example:

  1. Copper (Cu)
  2. Silver (Ag)
  3. Gold (Au)
  4. Platinum (Pt)
  5. Palladium (Pd)

Barrier metals include, for example:

  1. Molybdenum (Mo)
  2. Nickel (Ni)
  3. Nickel vanadium (NiV)

Typical adhesion metals are, for example:

  1. Chromium (Cr)
  2. Nickel-chrome
  3. Titanium-tungsten (TiW)

TRANSPARENT, ELECTRICALLY CONDUCTIVE COATINGS

Transparent, conductive coatings combine low electrical resistance with high light transmission. Such coatings can consist of transparent conductive oxides (TCO) or extremely thin metal coatings.

Our coating service offers you capacity in our application laboratory on our in-house coating systems, and experienced experts who remain on hand to provide you with expert support. With our systems, we can perform suitable sputtering processes for the deposition of electrically conductive coatings on glass, silicon or film substrates.

Examples of transparent conductive oxides (TCO):

  1. Indium tin oxide (ITO)
  2. Aluminium-doped zinc oxide (AZO)
  3. Fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO)Antimony-doped tin oxide (ATO)

Ultra-thin metal films, for example, consist of:

  1. Gold (Au)
  2. Silver (Ag)

Coating service

In our application laboratory, we offer capacities for prototype production or small series production on our proprietary coating systems.  Our experienced experts will advise and support you.

HIGH-RESISTANCE COATINGS (RESISTORS)

The electrical resistance of high-resistance coatings can be adjusted over a wide range by selecting suitable materials, starting at around 10 ohms and extending through 1000 ohms to the mega-ohm range.

Conductive coatings in electrical circuits include, for example:

  1. Tantalum nitride (TaN)
  2. Nickel chrome (NiCr)

Coating material up to 1000 Ohm:

  1. Silicon chromium (SiCr)
  2. Silicon chromium oxide (SiCrOx)

Coating material up to 1 mega-ohm:

  1. Doped polysilicon

ELECTRICALLY INSULATING COATINGS (DIELECTRICS)

Dielectric materials have no free charge carriers, which is why they are generally not (or only slightly) electrically conductive. This is why they are often used as insulators. Using certain techniques – such as HF sputtering, pulsed DC sputtering or reactive sputtering – they can be applied in thin coatings.

Frequent electrically insulating coatings

  1. Aluminium oxide (Al2O3)
  2. Silicon oxide (SiO2)
  3. Silicon nitride (SiN)

Other dielectric coatings

  1. Metal oxides such as molybdenum oxide (MoO2)
  2. Titanium oxide (TiO2)
  3. Tungsten oxide (WO2)
